The Detroit Redwings have not had the season they expected to start with, but that has been remedied by moves from GM Roberts.
The scoring hasnt been an issue, but the defense and goaltending have been cause for concern. GM Roberts feels those problems have been resolved with the recent trade for Star goalie Tomas Vokoun. With the addition of Vokoun that put the Wings over the cap by a bit, so something had to be done without hurting the team. That is when Roberts stepped up and made a big move. Trading Superstar Marian Hossa. No cause for concern as he brought in Superstar Daniel Alfredsson and also youngster Chris Campoli on D. While the team did gain experience it also got some youth on the back end to help out the future of this aging defense.
This Redwings team is the 2nd best in scoring only 1 point behind the Bruins, but on the defensive end of things are 6th worst in goals against. With the addition of Vokoun GM Roberts looks to run to the top spot and take it from the sharks with authority.
Roberts said that there are a few moves to be made to get the team to 100% and sure up a solid playoff team. The moves to be made will be depth at this time since the core is pretty well set.
An unlikely leader:
Jiri Hudler leads the team in points with 40 in 42 games played. Not his normal since he is playing less minutes than the top line guys, but anybody on the team will tell you he earns every point he gets.
The Shocker:
Evgeni Malkin is 4th on the team in scoring with only 35 points. Playing mostly 1st line and top PP this season nobody would have thought he would be 4th in scoring. The rest of the season GM Roberts is putting alot of pressure on Malkin to step up and bring the scoring up for his line.
Look for an extremely strong 2nd half effort from the Redwings. While in 2nd place in the conference, nobody is happy in Detroit with the results so far. This team is amped up with new players coming in that want to help. We expect big things to come out of Hockeytown USA.
